It’s not official terminology … you’ll probably never see it on a growth chart or in a medical book. But ask nearly any mom, grandma, grandpa, auntie, uncle, fairy godmother and definitely any of us baby photographers, and we’ll tell you the “squish factor” is an undeniable, irresistible, 100 percent real thing. And it’s most commonly found in the 3 mo. –  11 mo. crowd – the ones that aren’t yet so busy toddling and running around.

It’s found on the upper thighs, the lower thighs, the chubby feet and all those kissable bellies and squeezable cheeks. And let’s not forget the “wristlets” (a word shared by a colleague long ago upon seeing my own 6 mo.-old daughter in all her glorious baby chub and plenty of squishes right at the wrist).

As proof of this squish phenomenon, sweet Norah recently visited me at my Pearland photography studio to mark her 3 mo. milestone and upcoming Hebrew Naming Ceremony with professional images. She and those stunning blue eyes rocked her Mini Session – even the extended tummy time!

Now THIS is what that pregnancy glow is all about. And, no, it’s not simply the 100 degree Houston temps.

In the words of Beyonce’s “Flawless”, I’m pretty sure she woke up like this.

Just four weeks shy of giving birth and the grace and confidence that comes with growing life, and the excitement building to finally meet her baby is all there shining through. These are some of my favorites from her recent mini maternity session here in my northwest Pearland TX studio. She’s a girl after my own heart with the signature color of that dress (swoon!) And I can’t wait to meet her little one for their newborn session in about a month.

It’s been a wildly busy summer full of activities, visitors, sessions and editing. And I’m back at the blog Monday to share recent favorites. Until then, enjoy this gorgeous mama and her ridiculously cute belly.

Have a great weekend!

If you read yesterday’s blog post (and perhaps have been following this blog for some time), you know it’s true. And Charlotte proves it once again: 6-8 month-olds are some of the happiest little people on the planet. Having completed her newborn session (see my favorites on the blog) here in my Pearland studio, it was time to move outdoors to capture her big milestone: sitting up on her own and plenty of tummy time.  Her session incorporates some of my all-time favorite colors!

This is another example of finding a little pocket of wonderful wildflowers right here just off the beaten path of a busy roadway, behind a hotel of all places. But it was just the right backdrop for our nature shots, and Charlotte lit up with big expressions and gummy smiles showcasing those first teeth … proud of herself for sitting up and taking it all in.

The variety of session types, from a boutique studio newborn session to several outdoor sessions (either urban, nature or both) is something that my Baby’s First Year program clients truly appreciate looking back at that quickly-changing first year. I’m so excited to watch Charlotte grow and capture her “on the move” at her one-year session. It will be here sooner than you think!

Enjoy some of my favorites from her six-month Baby’s First Year session:

    CUTIE!

  • If you have friends or family in the Houston area, please feel free to share this post. 🙂 Word-of-mouth is still the very best way to establish business and I would be ever so grateful! Thank you!

… we swooned.

There was no way around it. This handsome little man was the quintessential “sitter”: happy, smiling, clapping, enamored with his toes. It’s really amazing to think of the growth of a child during that first year and how quickly the milestones pass from curly, sleepy newborn to happy, smiling and sitting up to cruising/walking/running at the one-year session. And I can’t think of one time when the 6-8 month session wasn’t my favorite session of a baby’s first year. This was certainly no exception.

We began with a city feel incorporating the blues of concrete and surrounding building color, then moved out a bit to a beautiful little patch of nature for a country feel. That’s perhaps one of my favorite things about being on the Pearland side of SE Houston – that I’m able to incorporate a little of both (city/country) in a single session when the mood calls for it. And there is a ton of variety throughout this side of the Greater Houston metro. Moreover, within 40 minutes and we can be at the Gulf of Mexico on the beach or the boardwalk. I often tell my clients to “trust the process” given that a shot that appears to be in a vast expanse of wildflowers may, in reality, have been shot in a tiny patch behind a grocery store or around the corner from a busy neighborhood. I call these my “little pockets of wonderful.” And my iPhone is full of notes to remind me of the addresses of these spots as I go about my normal daily travels.

With those beautiful yellow buds in the background, I knew his blue suspenders, newsboy hat and little bow tie were ideal for my vintage blue baby bed and shabby blue chair.

But nothing shone more than those baby blue eyes and the people who love him most looking back at him.

Thank you, Leah, for such kind words!! I am so excited to watch him grow!

    Yes he is, Bonnie!

Kami, you are amazing! We are so happy with the way our pictures turned out and couldn’t imagine being any happier with our choice in photographer. We can’t wait to come back for our one year session! thank you again!

With Spring having “sprung” and our conversations about their nursery colors meticulously scrawled in my notebook, I had a clear vision long before I ever met baby of the combinations of fabrics, wraps, small flower headbands and sets that would complement their newborn session here in my Pearland studio.

And then they came through the studio door looking far more alive and … well, fresh … than most new just-had-a-baby-a-week-ago parents I’ve encountered. Dad carefully sat the baby carrier down while I gave them a tour of the studio and explained what to expect once we began our newborn session. And then I caught a glimpse of Charlotte with that dark hair, oh-so-sweet baby rolls and those rosebud lips.

Simply put: I.was.smitten.

And it’s easy to see why:

The vintage doilies in the purple setup above and the mint green setup below were made by my late great-grandmother and my late grandmother respectively.

And you can’t walk in with tats like that and expect me NOT to ask you to take your shirt off for a few images … I love that baby and dad each hold the same expression in their eyes here:

I always go in with a shot list and planned session flow knowing that a newborn baby is the wildcard. My plans include several backup ideas if perhaps baby is wide awake instead of sleeping for any given color way or themed setup. And those eyes-wide-open images are often some of the most cherished, especially if baby is calm and tracking me, which I’ve witnessed many babies do as early as a week old.

If you’re reading this and are expecting or know someone who is, please don’t hesitate to contact me. I’m happy to go over the “hows” and “whys” of each session type, as well as final products available and scheduling. It helps to talk through your session ideas, any concerns you may have or additional questions in person, over the phone or even via email prior to choosing your photographer. It’s a big deal. The newborn phase is so fleeting, trust me. Whether you choose Kami Brady Photography or not, I want you to have the absolute best experience. So I created a “How to Choose Your Newborn Photographer” checklist of questions you should ask every photographer you’re considering. It goes well beyond simply comparing session fees and digital files, I promise!

  • Great work! Awesome name 🙂

As we head into a long weekend of remembrance, dedications, honors and festivities – for Memorial Day, graduations, summer kickoffs – this session seemed so very fitting to describe the celebration of the ties that bind us together and the roots that truly do grow wings.

I’ve been photographing this exceptional family ever since their baby was just six-months-old and sitting up on his own for the first time. And many times since, commemorating Bar Mitzvahs; the last long (gorgeous!) curls before their youngest son’s first haircut; and milestones in between to capture the stages and ages of children on the move.

Along the way, I’ve marveled at their collective patience neatly wrapped around a laid back parenting style centered on respect, trust and healthy doses of humor, and grounded in the principles of education, faith and life experiences. I’ve watched as they’ve given each of their children solid roots by which to ground themselves with a sense of belonging, all the while offering them wings with which to experience the world with a sense of purpose. As a helicopter mom, there really aren’t adequate words to describe how positively this has impacted my own parenting style. I’m still very “helicopter,” but at least a few times a week, I ask myself, “what would they do?” No lie. And proof that it really does take a village (or at least an annual photo session with the “H” family) to raise a child.

At our family session two years ago, their flock was still living under one roof and their baby still had those long curls. We happened upon an old upright piano just sitting outside an old downtown building … serendipity at its finest given they are musically gifted:

Fast-forward to our most recent session and we found ourselves celebrating the return of their oldest children from international university studies and world travels. What a difference two years makes – they are all taller, more mature, and I’m sure wiser in so many ways thanks to the two they call Mom and Dad.

The colors of this session are as vibrant as their unique personalities and this always, always, always leaves a lasting impression on me. I hope it does for you, too!

  • Gotta love Facebook’s methods. Out of all who have liked my page, FB has shown this to a whopping 42! Nuts … definitely why it pays to NOT have all your eggs in the FB basket.
