… and when she stepped out of their car, there it was.

I’m certain I gasped with delight – the first thought running through my head was how jaw-dropping gorgeous mom looked in.that.dress. I very nearly didn’t have words. If I could have painted a dress the exact colors that I want my own personal “brand” and my photography brand to scream, this dress would be it.

And then I saw baby girl in her adorable pink outfit and it was pretty much all over for me. Ha!

I imagined park security finding me lying there, passed out on the ground:

“Forget the extreme heat and humidity,” they would later say. “She died from an overdose of fabulous. Her client says she lost consciousness shortly after they arrived. Poor girl.”

But in all seriousness, I’ve had dreams about that dress ever since. Maybe, just maybe you’ll see it pop up somewhere on my new profile shots at some random point in time. Hmmmmm ….

Below are some of mine (and their) favorites from our family photography session in downtown Houston. I’ve had a string of adorable, “clappy”, super happy one-year olds lately and that alone makes me happy. This sweet girl just celebrated her first birthday and she definitely came prepared to steal the show. She also stole my heart with everything from those tiny little teeth peeking out to the occasional kick of her heel as if to say “look at me” posing here. And I think she’s the perfect mix of mom and dad. (We even managed to lure him into a few shots at the end even though he had planned on this session being all about his girls).

I go into the creative planning for family photography sessions in much the same manner that I plan all of my sessions: we first talk purpose/vision and the milestones we want to capture; then we talk about personal sense of style, where clients plan to display and how they will share their final images. Finally, we get into the really fun elements like outfits and location. Family sessions can take place in any number of urban or nature spots around Greater Houston and Pearland. For more than a decade, I’ve been choosing locations that complement the session purpose and overall color scheme of client attire.

And when the expressions and laughs and connections come together with the compositions and the locations and the outfits, it’s a really beautiful thing.

Just like this beautiful boy and his beautiful family. He truly brought his “A” game as we commemorated his first birthday and the standing, clapping, laughing that comes along with this big milestone. He is the absolute light of their lives. And, unlike outfits and locations and home decor, there was no preplanning required on my part surrounding the authentic joy they get from one another. I’m just the lucky girl who got to capture it.

In ways philosophical, metaphorical, physical and oh-so-much-bigger than their family photography session, this is how it all comes together.

Coming off the high of watching three straight weeks of Olympic Games, this colorful child photography session seemed like the perfect one to share this morning! I’ve been photographing him since mama was pregnant and it’s been nothing short of a joy to watch him grow and develop into his own little personality. He’s got a sweet disposition combined with just the right amount of spunk … all the right stuff to ensure in this life, he will most definitely soar!

… With or without superhero cape. 🙂

Soren.

Although his name comes from the Latin Severus, Severinus, and Severinius – family names from the word for stern, believe me when I say there was nothing stern about this little guy.

On the contrary, he was oh-so-sweet. Oh-so-snuggly.

This tiny Soren was truly something.

And mom and dad could not be any more enamored with him.

Some favorites from his newborn session here in our Pearland studio:

Watch out world, this is Brooke, Class of 2016.

She’s got more moxie in her little finger on a bad day than most have in their selves on a good day.

And just in case you haven’t heard the word “moxie” in … oh … a generation or so … here’s the definition:

mox·ie
ˈmäksē/

noun

NORTH AMERICAN informal
  1. force of character, determination, or nerve.
ex: “when you’ve got moxie, you need the clothes to match”

She’s not only the pretty one … she’s the smart one, too.

In creating her high school senior photography session, I really wanted to showcase that depth of character and beauty, both inside and out. What resulted was more than I could have hoped. She simply shines!

“Seven in :07”

In sharing favorite images from her session, I thought it might be fun to also share a brief Q&A I did with her – 7 short, sweet, completely random questions in about seven minutes. A little peek into her world:

Me: What do you want to be when you grow up?

B: I’m majoring in biology and I plan to be a dentist

Me: Name your favorite Houston restaurant.

B: A small Italian place in Rice Village called D’amicos

Me: What will you miss most about high school?

B: I’ll miss all of my high school friends and being with the same class of people since basically 4th grade.

Me: What will you miss least about high school?

B: Drama and gossip.

Me: You can see one musician/band live – who would it be?

B: Rihanna.

Me: If you could trade places for a day with one person (famous or otherwise), who would it be and why?

B: My mom so I can see how hard it is to deal with me and my dad :).

Me: What’s the one thing you bet even your best friends would be surprised to know about you?

B: Even though I’m talkative and can be loud and funny at school, I’m actually pretty quiet at home and like being by myself. I would rather stay in and watch movies than go out with a big group of people.

This little man was all snuggles and squishes for us as we captured his first professional portraits while mom, dad and grandma looked on in the comfort of our client lounge adjacent to the main shooting room. The studio is warm, and white noise provides a gentle hum in the background as my newborn session assistant and I move through various shot setups, compositions, wraps and prop changes. I like to call it “session mojo,” but to sleep-deprived new parents a week after birth, it’s simply 2-3 hours of quiet relaxation. And who wouldn’t like that?

We played with rich blues, soft blues and gold/browns during his session in keeping with the design theme of their home. But colors aside, the brightest light in our session was their perfect, snuggly, sleepy boy.

I often get a ton of inspiration from baby’s own nursery. In this instance, his nursery walls are navy blue with that light almost-turquoise-blue stripe. The resulting signature image incorporates the actual matte gold animal figurines from his nursery bookshelf. It also shows baby’s small scale relative to all of his nursery items … something that changes so very rapidly during baby’s first year.

A side note about safety: The image above is an optical illusion; baby was not actually sitting up on a bookshelf hanging on a wall. (The actual image was shot from above with the bookshelf lying flat on the floor and my assistant’s hands on the baby at all times as he also lay on the navy backdrop with legs and bum seated on the bookshelf just as they would have been if he had truly been sitting up on the shelf. The books and figurines were propped from behind so that they would “sit” properly on the shelf even though the shelf wasn’t actually hanging).

One for the generations

I’ve said it before, but I truly, truly love when grandparents come along for the session – and, even better, when they step in front of my camera. This allows for a “generations” portrait as well as a few shots that showcase the excitement of being a grandparent whether for the first time, the second time or more. In the image below, he is actually smiling at his grandma. 🙂
