I love the one-year sessions, especially when we can include mom and dad, showcasing these new little families of “three.”

You wouldn’t know it from looking, but this session in downtown Houston was on one of our hottest, most humid mornings (sometimes it feels like ALL mornings could be described that way). And still baby girl was a champ for us (mom and dad, too!) – as was her dear Auntie who literally flew back to Pearland and then back downtown in her car after picking up the second outfit which they accidentally left at home in the hustle and bustle of getting out the door for their session.

Another cool fact from this session pun intended: Mom didn’t sweat the whole time. No lie. Just stood there in that awesome fuchsia jacket (and those shoes!) looking fabulous. There’s a woman where I work out that can do an entire 1-hour Orange Theory class and not sweat, either, despite busting her tail running and lifting and rowing. Then there’s me looking like I jumped into a shower work out clothes and all, mascara running down my cheeks looking like I may just stroke out any second. But that’s another story for another day! Ha!

Heat or no heat, I couldn’t have asked for a better way to spend a Saturday morning than this.

Enjoy my favorites of this sweet girl with those gorgeous cheeks and eyelashes (and the two people who love her most in the world):

This little man wasn’t about to miss a thing during his newborn photography session. So we made sure we didn’t miss any one of his wide-eyed expressions, either. Including all that newborn “squish”, those dimples and those long lashes.

And did I mention sibling shots with the older siblings (5+ years) are becoming a favorite of mine? It’s just the right age to take good direction and securely cradle the baby (with our newborn session assistant right there for safety).

You’ll definitely be seeing more of this handsome fellow as he moves through my Signature Baby’s First Year Program, and I can’t wait to watch him grow. 🙂

For all of my Signature Newborn Sessions, I plan out each set (including props, wraps, flowers, etc.) and every color theme before the session so that every element is ready to go when baby arrives at my studio. But, that doesn’t mean my newborn session assistant and I don’t come up with “what ifs” and ideas on the fly. This first shot is a perfect example of the kinds of serendipity that have us quietly high-fiving and giggling to ourselves.

The little vintage tea set was a gift to my daughter from my own mom. But once we had baby securely in the basket for the second image below and began shooting, we quickly realized her little finger was curled ever just so. And, well … sometimes a girl just needs her own little tea cup. It made for a nice surprise when mom finally viewed her session images.

If you watch the blog faithfully, you’ll be seeing sweet Harper again at her six-month and one-year Baby’s First Year sessions. Until then, grab yourself a cup of something warm (I know there’s actually a fall chill to the air somewhere in this country besides here in hotter-than-hot Houston) and enjoy a few of my favorites from her newborn session created at our Northwest Pearland studio:

If they had a theme … just one word that describes them, it would absolutely be sunshine. In all the years I’ve been friends with and photographing them, it’s honestly the first thought I always have. Whether in front of the camera, at work, at school or just hanging around the neighborhood, their personalities and connections are everything you see here.

Warm. Happy. Energetic. Strong.

So it came as absolutely no surprise to me that their color theme was bright, vibrant yellows and reds. Because, of course … sunshine.

My approach to Signature Family Sessions is a little bit posed, a little bit unposed and random moments tossed in for good measure. We photograph the entire family and switch back and forth between individual children, parents and various combinations shaking it up and keeping things interesting. In short, there’s very little time to be bored and just enough time to capture those genuine interactions and expressions.

Just like sunshine, these four had me beaming at session’s end and again as I was editing. Below are some of my all-time favorites:

I love a good challenge when it comes to creating signature newborn art pieces that will eventually be displayed in the nursery or a prominent area of a client’s home. And, upon booking a Signature Newborn Photography Session, I chat a lot with clients about the colors of their home, the theme of baby’s nursery and any sentimental items or special interests they have. Doing so means, come session day, I’ve already pre-designed the image in my head and just need baby to carry it out.

Some of these images come together fully in-camera, while others come together in the camera and – later – in Photoshop as design composites featuring multiple digital elements and creations.

I was pulling some images from the archives for another project just a bit ago, and was reminded of another art piece that began as a simple conversation with my upcoming newborn client. She sent me an email wondering if we might create something different than your traditional newborn posing … something that was sentimental to them. And the book “On the Night You Were Born,” by Nancy Tillman, was a favorite tradition of theirs. My wheels began turning and the creative process began. The following image was our final result. To read more about the process and see the “before” shots as it came together in the studio, take a trip back to 2012 on my blog.

Which brings me back to this recent session and two adventuresome, world-traveling parents. When mom told me they loved to travel and hoped to instill that same sense of wonder and adventure in their son, my wheels once again began turning. Then she mentioned the fact that they found out they were pregnant while living in Taiwan. Their little world traveler was truly made in Taiwan. And their resulting signature art image was made right here in my Pearland studio. In its final custom frame hanging as a the centerpiece in their dining room along with other travel memorabilia, it’s sure to be a conversation piece long after little man is standing tall next to those vintage suitcases:

In talking with Mom prior to our session, I also discovered that Dad is a huge Game of Thrones fan. So much so that they’ve collected all of the Direwolf Cub plushies for his nursery. We were able to surprise Dad with a custom-framed 20×30 art piece featuring none other than his own “cub” surrounded by the Direwolf pack:

What a sweet boy he is! More of my favorites from his newborn session, including that wonderful blue and mustard “boho” quilt straight from his nursery:

This beautiful girl wasn’t about to miss a single.thing. No, ma’am. She was one of the most alert, attentive and – while awake – calm newborns we’ve photographed here in our Pearland studio in quite awhile. And she was so expressive! To my delight, she also gave us several long sleepy stretches. It was really the best of both worlds, allowing us to create a signature image for her Dr. Seuss-themed nursery and play with so many vibrant color-themes in her other image setups.

That UH-MAZING orange swirled rug? Straight from the nursery. Those whimsical canvas story prints? Yep. From the nursery.

When possible, I love the challenge of creating an art print especially for baby’s room, featuring none other than baby. It’s a great way to show their tiny size and scale, as well as incorporate sentimental items.

This sweet girl’s hair, lips … those eyes … had us melting.
